AWS Backup and disaster recovery for production web infrastructure
CloudArc Solutions designed and implemented an automated AWS Backup and disaster recovery solution for a production web application, providing daily backups, centralized recovery points, and a defined RTO-aligned recovery process.
The client was operating a production web application that needed reliable backup and recovery capabilities to protect against infrastructure failures, accidental changes, data corruption, and other unexpected production incidents. The goal wasn't simply to create backups, but to establish a repeatable disaster recovery process that could quickly restore the production environment when required.
CloudArc Solutions designed and implemented an automated backup and recovery solution using AWS Backup. The solution automatically creates daily backups of the production infrastructure, stores recovery points in a centralized AWS Backup Vault, and applies a seven-day retention policy so recovery points expire automatically once they age out of the operational recovery window.
What We Built
- An automated AWS Backup plan that creates daily backups without requiring engineers to manually initiate backup jobs.
- A centralized AWS Backup Vault that separates recovery data from the production environment, so recovery points stay available even if production infrastructure is affected by an incident.
- A seven-day rolling retention policy with automatic expiration, keeping storage costs predictable and preventing recovery points from accumulating indefinitely.
- A defined recovery workflow: identify the incident, select the appropriate recovery point, restore the infrastructure, validate the application, and return to production.
- A recovery architecture aligned with the client's production Recovery Time Objective (RTO), so the backup strategy is built around how quickly the service actually needs to come back online.
Business Impact
The client now has an automated backup mechanism protecting production against unexpected infrastructure or application incidents, with recovery points readily available in the AWS Backup Vault instead of relying on ad-hoc manual snapshots. The seven-day retention policy keeps backup storage costs predictable, and the defined, RTO-aligned recovery workflow gives the team a practical, repeatable path back to production when it matters most.
